Sylva Varescu, a well known cabaret singer, is in love with Prince Edwin von und zu Lippert-Weylersheim, who has had another match arranged by his disapproving family. Matters are happily resolved when it turns out that the Prince's mother had also once been a cabaret singer.

Among the most popular of operettas, Die Csárdásfürstin (The Gypsy Princess) includes a charming entrance song for Sylva, as she sings of her home, her unsuccessful suitor Count Boni's farewell to her, as she plans her departure for America, Ganz ohne Weiber (Quite without women) and the famous duet between Countess Stasi, Edwin's proposed wife, and her reluctant cousin, Machen wirs den Schwalben nach (Let us copy the swallows).
