Synopsis of Suor Angelica

Gianni Schicchi

Opera in One Act
by Giacomo Puccini (1858 - 1924).

The 'loving' relatives of the freshly deceased Buoso Donati are in mourning. However, thier affliction lasts only until they find Buoso's will and realize that he has bequeathed practically everything to a monastery. This sobering news quickly transforms their feigned mourning into anger towards the departed.

In order to change the will, the family of Donati turns to the peasant Gianni Schicchi. This con artist impersonates the deceased Donati in order to attempt changing the existing will. Meanwhile Rinuccio, a Donati, and Lauretta, Schicchi's daughter, wish to marry despite the two families' class differences.

Schicchi tricks the docter into believing he is the still sick Donati and the next step is to dictate a new will to the Lawyer. However an unexpected twist occurs at the end of this comedic opera that shocks the family of Donati.

Suor Angelica

Suor Angelica

Opera in One Act
by Giacomo Puccini (1858 - 1924).

In a convent for having caused a scandal to her noble family by having an illegitimate child, Sister Angelica is in her seventh year of penance. Her aunt, the Princess, arrives to demand that Angelica sign a document turning over her inheritance to her young sister who is about to be married. When Angelica inquires about her son, the Princess tells her coldly that the child has been dead for two years. The Princess remains unforgiving of Angelica's sin and refuses to forgive her.

After the Princess leaves, Angelica, in despair, takes poison. Bidding farewell to the sisters, she realizes too late that she has committed a mortal sin and prays for forgiveness before she dies. The chapel doors open and a host of angels appears. The Virgin Mary is leading Angelica's child by the hand toward the dying mother.
