and Brunswick, and first performed in Paris in October, 1836.
Act 1 is set in Longjumeau. Act 2 is set in Madeleine's house in Paris. Act 3, in
Madeleine's country house near Paris.
Synopsis
Chappelou, the Postilion in Longjumeau, is persuaded by the Marquis de
Corcy, an opera impressario, to desert his bride Madeleine, hostess at the inn, so
that he may achieve fame in Paris. In that city, he becomes an operatic star under
the name of St.Phar. His jilted bride also goes to Paris and assumes the identity of
Mme de Latour. The opera singer, St Phar., formerly Chappelou, then falls in love
with Mme de Latour, not recognizing her as his abandonded love, Madeleine. But he is
not the only person to fall in love with Mme de Latour. the Marquis de Corcy does so
as well! But in the fullness of operatic time, the double identities are at last
unscrambled, when the Postillon discovers that he has married the same woman twice.
